Houston we have a laser cutter…
As you may be aware, there is now a laser cutter in the new building, which is now available for student use. If you wish to use it you need to approach a laser trained member of staff with an drawing of what you want to do, staff will be able to discuss limitations and technical requirements…
Next you will prepare a file to specification, buy your materials and arrange with the staff member a time when they are available to help you, you will be required to sit with the machine for the entire time it is in use.
In no particular order, staff who are laser trained includes:
Vibeke Luther – New digital print room tech
Liz Wilson – New screen printing tech
Tom Lynch – New Media GTA
Luke Watts – New Media GTA
Oliver Smith – New Media GTA
Rose Thomas – Graphics GTA
And most of the IT technicians…
Use of the machine is charged at £1 per minute and given a file we can give an estimate the cutting time for you, again with the help of laser trained staff. Materials for cutting under no circumstances can contain PVC, and MDF and polycarbonate are excluded too for various reasons. Plywood, and acrylic plastic cut very well.
Email tom@gdnm.org for general advice or questions, or speak to any of the above staff.
