Drawing Week

Drawing Brief
Work to be presented on 10 sheets of A3 paper.
Deadline Monday 20th February.

1. Draw something observed, could be figures in a room, could be an image on a screen, with the paper out of sight
(underneath a drawing board/table).
2. Self portrait in proportional geometry only.
3. Now use that on a separate sheet to draw a tonal study of your face using 3 point lighting, modeling the form.
4. Quarter the paper, and draw a ‘hybrid’ portrait taking elements or features from four different people.
5. Draw 10 silhouettes of figures in very different poses.
6. Using subject matter either taken from ‘real’ life or from photographs, films, animation, or even your imagination, draw an interior clearly using one-point perspective.
7. Using subject matter either taken from ‘real’ life or from photographs, films, animation, or even your imagination, draw an exterior clearly using two point perspective.
8. Use three point perspective in a scene of your choosing to either show a birds eye/fly by view or a worms-eye/view.
9. Use TONE and TEXTURE to demonstrate aerial perspective.
10. Use plans elevations, diagrams OR storyboard frames to plan a prospective photo/film/animation scene

WHY

This brief requires you to give shape and coherence to your work as a whole and to ensure that it is appropriately formatted both for internal PATHWAY STAGE assessment and UCAS APPLICATION.
You are NOT asked to produce separate or new work unless, in going through your portfolio, you discover gaps. Finding the gaps is what this is intended to do. If you have done all, or most, of the Pathway Briefs you should have everything required.

WHAT

Use the stipulated formats to produce:

1. A digital portfolio of work

2. A physical sketchbook

- see theSPEC, below, for details

HOW

Go through all the briefs and check outcomes and requirements.

• Reverse Engineering – this is your model for how to develop a media specific sketchbook
• Petulant Kulture 1 & 2 – you telling us and future colleges/employers what you are interested in
• Frankenstein – group work and individual interpretation
• theEPLODED/EXPANDED – shows creative problem solving and individual interests and obsessions
• talkingBOUTmyGENREation – demonstrates your grasp of the ‘languages’, codes and practices of your chosen media discipline/context

ALL workshops/day-length briefs, set you tasks which generated folder content. Your job, having used the briefs to ake work, is to put them aside and think of ways to put a coherent folder of work that shows a RANGE and DEPTH of inquiry…..

You have already been shown how to create FLCKR. & VIMEO accounts as well as a GDNM blog. If you missed that or need a refresher; ask Simon.

theSPEC

1. Digital folder; all work in either .jpeg (for stills/scans/grabs etc) OR .mov (for all moving image sequence. WE CANNOT GUARENTTE TO ASSESS WORK SUBMITTED IN ANY OTHER FILE FORMATS. You must always keep ‘original’ digital files separately and at the size they came off the camera etc. HOWEVER, you should size down to screen-resolution where necessary for assessment and uploading purposes. If in doubt seek advice before doing anything. This folder should be uploaded onto the TEACHING COMPUTERS in the desktop folders as labeled. Also uploaded to the internet in FLICKR &/OR VIMEO and linked through to your personal blog.

2. Physical Sketchbook & GDNM blog. These must contain all your research, development and critical commentary. Go through EVERY page, EVERY image, note or reference and apply the following:
• WHAT questions, such as – what was I interested in when looking at this reference, What was I trying to understand, question, achieve?
• WHERE questions, such as – where did I find it, where else can I find other related /relevant work, where & when did I do it?
• WHO questions, such as – whose work is it (VERY important – so you don’t get accused of plagiarism you must include a Bibliography of important references using the Harvard Referencing Format) or who inspired this?
• HOW questions, such as – how did I or they make it, what processes, materials and formats were used etc?
• WHY questions, the most valuable and often over looked – why is this – interesting/relevant/difficult/challenging/inspiring/beautiful/hideous/despicable/redeeming/erotic/political/emotive………..

NOTE: You have NOT been asked to say what it means. Whilst it is good to think about what you are trying to ‘say’, to speculate more broadly about the different ways it might be taken, you should neither try to lead a reading nor pre-empt what your audience might receive or experience.

YOU MUST ENSURE that everything, physical or digital is clearly named with your FULL NAME

WHEN
 & WHERE

The final versions of the portfolios will be needed for HE application and the deadlines will be dictated by receiving universities or other educational/vocational agencies.

The ASSESSMENT DEADLINE, for which you need to have the content comprising the range and depth of work listed in the spec below, but not printed or mounted or overly edited.

PATHWAY ASSESSMENT HAND-IN: Monday 30th January 10.00 – 11.00 am, Room 39 & Room 41
